Training
The technology associated with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and nano mechanical testing is truly phenomenal and continues to develop at pace. In order for users to operate the CEMMS instruments in the most appropriate manner for their samples, and to understand the manner in which the data has been generated so as to correctly interpret the results, it is critical that they have an adequate foundational knowledge of the techniques and the operation of the instruments.
To ensure that all users have sufficient knowledge of their required analytical techniques prior to using the CEMMS instruments, we have introduced a preliminary training policy.
For SEM-related analysis, we are leveraging the outstanding online resources developed by Microscopy Australia on the MyScope Microscopy Training website.
Please note that these are very thorough descriptions of the fundamentals and operating principles of the techniques and require a significant time to complete.
For EBSD analysis we highly recommend that users familiarise themselves with the principles of the technique and analysis using the resources from the EBSD website.
For nano mechanical analysis, we are currently developing the training resources for this instrument.

SEM users
All academic users (Undergrad, Postgrad and staff) are required to complete the Module Topics on “Microscopy Concepts” and “Scanning Electron Microscopy”
In addition, Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students, Postdocs and academic staff are further required to complete the modules on “Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy” and/or “Focused Ion Beam”, if they plan to use these techniques for their analysis.
At the end of the “Scanning Electron Microscopy”, “Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy” and “Focused Ion Beam”, users are required to click on the “Assessments” tab and take the ten-question multichoice quiz.
It is a requirement that users achieve a minimum mark of 8 out of 10 for each quiz to show a sufficient level of understanding before using the SEM’s.
If you do not achieve a grade of 8 out of 10 or greater in your first attempt, you will need to click on the “Assessments” tab again and retake the quiz.
Please save the “certificate” of completion showing a minimum mark of 8 out of 10, and email this to c.hobbis@auckland.ac.nz.
You are required to have completed all of the necessary training modules and sent to the appropriate certificates, before making your first instrument booking.

Scanning Electron Microscopy
Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy
Focused Ion Beam
Note: Users are not required to review the material on “The electron gun”, “The vacuum system”, or the “Water chilling system”. However all other sections are required in order to answer the questions in the end of module “Assessment”.
